Several times we received letters with questions concerning health and safety of weavers and our participation in the production process. Here are some of these:

  1. What are the working conditions of baby sabyes employees who weave, dye (seen dye blog) etc. in terms of fair trade/work/ethically sourced baby items?
  2. Where does BabySaBye owners stand in terms of their beliefs in business ethics versus being culturally appropriated?

Baby SaBye is a business that commits to fair trade practices with local weavers in Thailand.

We are two friends, Volodina Tatiana and Belkina Svetlana. We are originally from Russia, currently living in Thailand. We are both married to Thais. They help us with the language barriers but have no other role in the business.

Everything is made and produced by local villagers under ethical and organic operational methods. All that village is supported by the state program OTOP. OTOP stands for ‘One Tambon (meaning sub-district) One Product’. It is a local entrepreneurship stimulus program which aims to support the unique locally made and marketed products of each Thai tambon all over Thailand. (About OTOP in Wikipedia)

The people we work with are free people who weave and appoint its costs to us. They buy and paint the threads themselves using traditional methods passed down from generation to generation with natural dyes. They then use these threads to weave our wraps.

These weavers will appoint one leader to meet with us to discuss our order.

Our design contribution mainly covers anything connected with structure and quality of threads, their combination, weaving and colour. This is also true for our mei-tais, slings and wrap-hemming and labellings.

We believe in fair treatment for all, and therefore will not support anything that is racially dismissive, culturally appropriative or any sort of minority ill-treatments.

Thank you for your support and love.
